Collelo, who has been with Mr Belcher, Mr Paul's trainer, for several years, and who, it will be remembered, piloted Tirailleur to victory: in the New Zealand and Canterbury Cups, and who has ridden Bonlanger in most of his races, has left Mr Paul's employ. A lively scene (says the Wairarapa Daily of Monday) occurred at the Tauherenikau races on Saturday last, and one which will not easily be forgotten. In the big event James, the rider of Tuhitarata (the winning horse), was seen on entering the straight to swerve and run Cornet and Hahara on to the rails. The. owner of Comet entered a. protest against Tuhitara'ta, which was Upheld by the Stewards of ;the. Club, and the jockey was disqualified for a month. ' The decision of the'' stewards did not: meet with public favour, as it was considered the foul was purely accidental, and the officers of the Club .were, hooted and hissed by the crowd. Several prominent members of the Club also resigned, their membership, and one delivered -an excited speech, in which he: referred in strong terms to the action of the Stewards. The officers maintain that the course they adopted was justifiable, inasmuch as the running throughout the whole meeting was anything but straight. While -sporting men who "knew a thing or two "were losing their money at the races on Boxing Day, four others, who knew nothing about the intentions of owners or their riders, made a tidy sum in rather a novel way.; : Two gentlemen first of all put the names of the horses engaged in each race, in a hat, and -then drew as to which animal should be backed on the machine. This was attended' with such success, the winning horse being drawn each time, that. two others took . the tip. When the day's racing was finished, the*, four " spores " bM succeeded in winning between them over eighty pounds — Napier Telegraph.
