The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, JUNE 27, 1891. Railway Report

From the Annual Report of the workrailway's presented to Parliament ,by the 'Commissioners, we Have made the 1 following extracts, which should prove of interest, not only to persons settled >in one neighborhood, -but to residents ill other part of the colony, showingas they do the rapid progress we are making and the large amount we contribute,- by this sectiou, to the railway revenue of the colony. The outcome "of the whole work of the year ending 31st 'March, 1891, was £1,121,701, (from which has to : be deducted working expenses) leaving a net profit of j>420,998 on a capital cost of £14,278,586, 1842 miles of railway, which gives a return of £2 18s lid per cent. This net profit has been the largest yet realised, and the cost of working the traffic has been lower than in any previous year.. There is an increase in the passenger, goods, and livestock traffic. The Palmerston Norths to Woodville line is expected to produce good financial results. The following are details of the total traffic :— Tonnage, 2,086,011; number of parcels, 413,074 ; season ticket, 13,881. Of this the section of line between Halcombe, and 'Palmerafcon contributed the following : —

There is now a station at Ashurst on the Palmerstou-Woodville line, which will not be taken into account uufcil' the end of the current year. Passenger tickets realised ; —

But in the case of Palmerston we may. expect to see the receipts under this bedding fall off consequent upon the opening of the Palmerston- Wood-' ville line, because, in future, passengers from Hawke's Bay will book right through. JThe private sidings contributed as follows :— Messrs Bartholomew, Feilding, £203 4s 7d ; Messrs Bailey 8r05.,. £1325 16s sd; and the same at their Rata mill, further' north, £504 ,1 7s 2d. These figures prove that with the increase of population, as indicated in the last census returns, the amount of railway business has advanced side by side with the progr- 88- of settlement in the Oroua and Manawatu Counties."
