K.C.M.G., and formerly Minister of Finance in the Mackenzie Cabinet, of deliberately conspiring with a view to annexing Canada to~ the United States, and he also accused the editor of the Toronto j • Globe with secretly submitting to Ameri- ' can senators measures calculated t/> | weaken Canadian allegiance" to Great Britain and secure annexation to America. These charges created a great sensation * and roused the anger of the audience, who loudly proclaimed their loyalty to the Qneen. The Quebec Courier, a Conservative - organ, declares that the Right Hons. Sir L. Playfair, M.P. for Leeds, arid Mr J. , Chamberlain approve of Canadian free- » trade with America. - The Hons. C. H. Tupper and Macdouf gall, representatives from Nova Scotia m c the Canadian Parliament, were receiyed c withitnmease enthusiasm on their arrival 3 in Halifax. In addressing their constitu--1 ents both gentlemen emphasised the fact 1 that the elections must decide the quesJ tion whether Canada i 3 to remain a British colony or be absorbed by force and t fraud into the United States. The pamphlet . issued by Mr Farrer, i editor of the Toronto Globe, and referred to by Sir John Macdonald, in the course 5 of his address to the electors at Toronto, ) advised that measures should be at once • taken to coerce' Canada into annexation to the United States, and urged the imi position of tonnage dues on all Nova i Sootian vessels trading- to America. The pamphlet also advocated the suspension of bonding privileges, thus preventing trains from the Canadian side enteringthe United States. - - Sir John Macdonald, in concluding his speech, warned the country that if the Ministry were defeated at the forthcoming elections Mr Farrer would become leader of the movement in favour of an* nexation.
