The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, JANUARY 25, 1887. War News

The prospect of continued peace in Europe appears to becoming more uncertain every day. Recent telegrams have informed us that ©wing to the large purchases of horses made by the German Government, their export from that country has been prohibited, and in consequence a marked depression has been produced in the continental Bourses. Germany complains that the French are making large purchases of planks in Alsace, evidently with the object of building huts for the troops which the frontier fortresses are unable to contain. On the other hand the French declare the the timber is being purchased for use in the building to be erected for the coming Paris Exhibition. The French have made large purchases of horses for remounts, in Denmark. Much anxiety is being manifested with regard to the situation in Germany, and in Mechlenburg and Westphalia preparations are being made for frontier camps. The attitude of Italy toward France is considered menacing and likely to lead to unpleasant complications. With the break up of winter weather, when campaigning becomes possible, there can be no doubt of war being declared.
