Feilding Borough Council.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the < ouncil was held in the Council Chamber on Thursday evening. Present — His Worship the Mayor, and Crs Rutherford, Sherwill, Lewers, Loudon, Fowles, Higgin, and Thompson. The minutes of the last adjourned ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was also read : — From Messrs Halcombe and Sherwill, offering to form and metal that part of Warwick street from Kimbolton road to Fergusson street, provided the Council will allow the expenditure to be a first charge upon the loan as soon as it is floated, the plan 9 and specifications to be prepared by the Borough Engineer, and the whole work to be done under his supervision and to his approval. From the Australian Mutual Provident A ssociation in reply to Cr Sherwill, to say that the Society cannot invest its funds in any debentures except those guaranteed by Government. From the Colonial Secretary's office informing the Mayor that the passing of the loan proposals had been duly gazetted. From Mr Rotheram, District Railway Manager, acknowledging the receipt of the Mayor's letter re the placing of a lamp in the vicinity of the Railway Station, and the making of the road from the Station to Kimbolton road, and stating that the matter shall receive consideration. A number of replies were received to the applications for information re the printing of debentures, but these are not yet public. The following tenders were received for lighting and cleaning the Borough lamps, finding oil to be included — James Morris, 10s per week ; Edward Turner, 10s per week. A petition was presented by Cr Loudon from the setters alongside the railway line, praying that the making of the road from the top of North street to Port* street be included in the first instalment of works to be done out of the loan. Fifteen signatures were attached to the petition. A similar petition, bearing eight signatures, was presented by Cr Thompson on behalf of the settlers of Port street. P* BLIC WOBKS BEPOBT. The following report of the Public Works Committee was read, and, on the motion of Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Fowles, was adopted : — Your Committee beg to report that plans and specifications for protective works near the Kiwitea stream have been prepared by the Borough Engineer, and are submitted to the Council. Your Committee recommend that tenders be at once invited for the work in accordance with the same. With regard to the Manchester street Bridge, and the bank of the stream, the Engineer advises that the approacli be protected with fascines, and a support be placed under the end of the bridge from which a portion of the bank Las already scoured away. The outlay is imperatively, necessary to prevent further damage. Your Committee therefore recommend that the work be carried out forthwith. Ihe cost would amount to only a few pounds. FBANK Y. LxTHBBipGE, Chairman* June 21st, 1883. With reference to the matter of the tenders received for debentures Cr Rutherford moved, and Cr Lettbridge seconded, That no tenders le accepted to-night, and that those persoas who have tendered, and not sent specimens of debentures, be requested to do so. Cr Lewers thought this would not be wise, as the Press being present, every person who intended to tender would tie able to take advantage of those already received. Cr Sherwill thought they could scarcely be called tenders at all, as the parties were only asked to give specimens and state prices ; some had done the one bnt not the other. The resolution was put amd carried. With reference to the lighting and cleaning of the lamps it was i.esolved, on the motion of Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Lewers, That the Finance Committee be authorised to draw out specifications for the lamp lighting, and to accept tenders. The Mayor said that he had consulted the settlers on the other side of the Oroua Bridge aud had been requested by them not to take any steps in the matter of the foot bridge, on account of the improbability of a permanent bridge being built if the foot bridge is made. ( r Lewers said that he had beea informed that the District Engineer had already been instructed to do the **rork of erecting the bridge, and that the money was already in a certain person's band to do the work. The matter was left open for further enquiries to be made. Some discussion ensued on th* matter of Messrs Halcombe and Sherwill's offer. Cr Lewers, while fully in sympathy with the subject of the letter, thought it might form a very undesirable precedent to accept the offer. Cr Higgin did not see that the Council was prepared to commit itself to a resolution that night. Cr Rutherford spoke in favor ofthe offer being accepted at once, as the ground was now in a comparatively good condition. It was generally considered not advisable to come to a resolution that night, ani one of the councillors moved a notice of motion for consideration at the next. meeting. The Council then adjourned till Thursday, .July sth, at the same hour and place.
