RAILWAY TRAFFIC RETURNS.

♦ We compile the following from the GoTsrnment Gazette, showing the railway traffic returns for the four-weekly period ended 24th Jane, also'for the corresponding period in the year 1881, on the Wanganui section of the New Zealand raili wayS : —

This return will give some idea of what " would have been" if the unfortunate Rangitikei bridge had remained standing, and traffic continued uninterruptedly. The expenditure was £5498 6s 6d; the average receipts per mile, £411 0» lOd ; average expenditure, £274 13s. This return puts the Wanganui line at the head of the list for June. The total receipts for the Colony, during the month of June, amounted to £69,656 14s Gd.
