ARMY SIDE TOO GOOD

LOSERS MUCH BELOW FORM

FAILURE TO PENETRATE DEFENCE

elkis kicks three goals

The Pukekohe Peace cup P-am silt fereil its first defeat this -season Saturday at Eden Perk. Am Mai d 1 when it went down lo the Aik k and Army representative I (nun to die tune of 22 points to nine aider a somewhat disappointing frame. The play was mucli he low tin* standard expected fron” teams' containing so many representative players. Pukekohe obtained a pair share of t lie hail from serums and while the captain. Charlie Saxton, ‘opened up the same at e\er\ stage and sent out nice passes, the other hacks failed to accept the opportunities offered and were quickly smothered by the quick-moving Auckland defence. It was a ease of the play not being varied enough to counter the Auckland tactics. As good as the Pukekohe team is. it can only play as well as its opponents will allow it, and this was the case on Saturday. The Teams The teams were: — Pukekohe (green and gold): Fullback. M. Boyce: three-quarters. .1. Dunn. F. Loughrin. .1. Elkis: liveeighths, S. Robinson, A. Manion: haltback. C. K. Saxton: forwards. R. Maskew. D. Coburn. C. Caldwell. D. McLeod. 11. 11. Deans, A. Bishop, D. Orant. D. Gibson. Auckland Army ,red and white) : Full-back. R. Scott: three-quarters. E. Weston. I. Butler. E. Boggs: liveeighths. W. Tittleton. B. Riley: halfback, F. Whittle: forwards. M. Smith, ,1. Mclntosh. N. Kidd. C. Reid. .1. Gunning, G. Mitchell, M. Cleary, c. Peterson. Pukekohe was captained by Saxton, while W. Tittleton led Army. The 'Cup side lost the toss and Army played against a slight breeze. Army made play open from the outset to set up a series of attacks which, however, failed to get through the defence. Or one occasion Boyce saved wad! in the face of a strong attack. 1 1 is good line kick reversing the position for his side. Good work in the loose by the Pukekohe forwards gained a lot of ground, while the backs, fed splendidly from the scrum by Saxton, were beginning to make their presence fell in quick thrusts. The green and golds were in trouble when, following a strong Army vanguard rush. Boyce failed to take a high kick, a penalty relieving. The red and white pack kept at it, and. following some tussles in the Pukekohe twenty-five a force-down resulted. First Points to Pukekohe So far there had been little sparkle in the game, although Saxton was shining in individual efforts. Scott was gaining good ground with strong line kicking for Army. Riley was prominent in a typical break through and sent a long pass to Weston, but Dunn came back fast to save. The Pukekohe backs were now getting plenty of the ball while the forwards were troublesome in the loose. In a fast counter-attack (tunning gathered possession but his pass was knocked forward. Then Dunn made a bright, dash, his in-pass going astray. From a resultant penally on the twenty-live line and on a fairly straight angle, Elkis opened Pukekohe's score with the spell half over. Pukekohe '■> Auckland Army . . . . . u Army went immediately to the attack. Boggs corning nicely into a back movement, but Riley dropped 1 1 is pass and a likely chance was tost. However. from a penalty to yards inside half-way, Scott kicked a tine goal to make the-score level. Auckland Army . . . . •'! Pukekohe :>

Army Forges Ahead Each side took turns on attack, and Butler made a break through in a rearguard move but sent a poor high pass lo Weston. A minute later Cleary led an Army forward move and although Peterson missed his pass the ball went through his arms to Gunning who touched down between the posts. Scott easily converted. Auckland Army . . . . S Pukekohe Butler was again in the picture -.mi gathered possession from his own kick. lie looked likely to score, but he hesitated near the line, when Duni> came fast and smothered him. r l he Army forwards were now going belter, Peterson on one occasion breaking away cleverly, but his pass was smothered. Play was of a ragged nature, relieved when W. Tit (acton dashed into a gap just outside his own twenty-live lo pass to Weston. The wing clapped on the pace, ran round Boyce, and beat Dunn to the corner flag. Scott failed with the kick. Half-time came with the score: Auckland Army . . .. 11 Pukekohe '■’< A couple of minutes after the resumption Army weid further in the lead. Riley broke through from a scrum and in-passed to Smith. Gunning and Mitchell chimed in. the latter scoring wide out. Scott failed with the kick. Auckland Army . . . . 11 Pukekohe J Visitors Within Striking Distance Pukekohe .again attacked, and Elkis went close at goal from a wide penally. bul Army drove back in a nice combined passing move. Two quick penally goals by Elkis from tbe twenly-five increased interest in the game, these successes enlivening tbe Pukekohe players. The score now was:— Pukekohe 9 Auckland Army . . . . 1 i Army attacked strongly and there was applause for G. Mitchell when a good effort at a pot went close. The Pukekohe pack was putting plenty of dash into its efforts, but lost Maskew, who was injured and replaced by Forrest. Tbe backs of both sides were now coming into action more effectively. In 'one attack Manion cut through splendidly, but Weston saved with a fine tackle against Dunn at Hie corner. Again tbe Army backs went to the attack. and again Weston beat Dunn. There was much more sparkle in tbe play at Ibis stage with Pukekohe, which had not yet scored a try, making every endeavour to get over. Army then took a turn, but a likely chance was lost when Butler passed poorly to a support. Pukekohe lost another forward, Grant, who was replaced by Hoare. A fine movement by Army led lo a good try. Riley started tbe movement, and Scott, the full-back, came into it three times, Boggs eventually scoring behind tbe posls. Scott converted. It was tbe besl piece of play of the game. Auckland Army . . . . 19 Pukekohe 9 Army kept up (he pressure, but Pukekohe was always ready to start counter moves. Weston injured bis arm in a lackie and was replaced by Kendall. The Army forwards were getting into Ihe tight play well, while the loam as a whole had more cmnbinalion than ils opponents, especially in the passing by Ihe forwards. Although penal! ies drove Army back on a couple of occasions, il was soon on the attack again, Duller losing Ihe advantage through a pour kick. Near lime Smith llirew a long pass across field to Duller, who sent out lo Roggs at half-way. Roggs turned on the pare lo run round near the posts. The srorrr failed with the kirk, and Ihe game ended: — Auckland Army . . . . 22 Pukekohe 0 Mr G. Peace was referee. Saxlmi and Manion were easily the pick of the Pukekohe backs, while I lie forwards, ably led by kishop. all played well.
