APPLES FOR SCHOOLS
TRANSPORT OVERLAPPING BEST QUALITY FOR CHILDREN At a recent meeting of the Auckland Farmers’ Union executive it, was reported that apples were being carted from the King Country to Auckland, there to be sorted, and subsequently despatched to the Otorohanga school, despite the fact that there were commercial orchards in close proximity to the school. The Minister of Marketing in his reply stated that there were no commercial orchards of any size around Otorohanga, although there were one or two growers in a small way who had been given licenses to sell to local retailers. The nearest depots to Otorohanga were Hawera and Hastings, and it was from these depots that supplies were drawn for the country trade in the surrounding districts. The Inte”nal Marketing Department, he added, takes special care in the type of fruit sent to schools to ensure that the apples are ripe and fit for immediate consumption. whereas retailers can take supplies of either cooking nr eating varieties in all stages of maturity.
