LIQUOR NEAR HALL

WHILE DANCE IS IN PROGRESS

YOUNG MEN CONVICTED

Two young men, V. J. Williams and D. C. Parry, of Te Kohanga, were charged at the Pukekohe Police Court last week before Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., that on March 28, at Tuakau, they did have liquor in their possession or control in the vicinity of the Oddfellows’ hall whilst a public dance was being held in the hall. Both pleaded guilty. Constable C. Robb said he was on duty at 10 p.m. on the date in question when a public dance was in progress. He noticed three men, the two defendants (and a companion who was now in camp), leave the hall and cross the road toward a motor car. They got into the car, drove away and proceeded along George Street. Witness followed in his car, and pulled up near where the defendant’s vehicle was parked. One young man had a bottle of beer in his hand and when he saw witness he threw it away. Shortly after they returned to the hall. Defendants said they had only one bottle between the three of them. Constable Robb added that defendants had informed him they were under the impression that they were quite in order in drinking their liquor away from the hall. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £3 and 12s costs in each case. The third man will be charged at the sitting of the Court on May 13.
