NO CEMENT

BOROUGH WORKS HELD UP

ENGINEER’S REPORT

"The concrete footpath in Franklin Road was completed during the month and immediately prior to the restriction placed on cement supplies. Further concrete constructional works including the hill storm channels will not now be undertaken this season. Cement supplies have been made available for essential works following an application already made,” stated the engineer, Mr F. O. Turner, in his report to last week’s meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council. The report continued: — Waterworks: All the valves with the exception of Two high pressure types, have been obtained and four valves have now been installed in existing mains. Unavoidable interruptions to the water supply service must occur but notice of warning is given in the area to be affected. Unforseen contingencies however cannot be allowed for in any such warning notice. For instance a burst pipe was located in Edinburgh Street after notice had been sent out that the service would be interrupted for the purpose of installing a valve in West Street. Both areas were undertaken simultaneously, one with warning and one without. General: The stock entrance to the Railway Station has now been culverted and metalled. The peat drain from this entrance to the Subway has also been tiled. A property in King Street has been cleared of rubbish and growth as arranged with the owner. (No progress has, however, been made towards the removal or stacking, of the bricks from the fallen wall, or towards the suggested fencing of the frontage. Drainage: The main outlet storm water drain from Manukau Road to the racecourse has been deepened to permit the lowering of one of the road culverts in order to provide additional subsoil drainage to owners who have contributed towards the cost of the work. It is proposed to lower the culvert and still permit the passage of traffic. As the work has to be carried out in a filling and in restricted road width a possible collapse of earth will necessitate the closing of the road at short notice for 48 hours.

The report was adopted and the engineer empowered to close Manukau Road while work on the culvert was in progress.
