PAPAKURA GETS FLAG

FOR NATIONAL SAVINGS FINE RECORD MADE INDUSTRIOUS POSTMASTER Papakura established a provincial lead last week in connection with the National savings accounts campaign which resulted in the flag being transferred from ICaikohe (the holders) to Papakura. The flag is yellow, bearing the words, “We lead with National savings,” was duly hoisted on Thursday over the post office. The idea of the Government in the first place was to divert the flow of money from things people cannot now buy to personal war savings accounts. The credit for this fine record must be given to the postmaster, Mr G. H. Davis, who has succeeded on his own initiative in persuading people to open' new accounts in the district to the tune of 1000. He has in six weeks recently toured the district from Takanini, Ponga and Drury canvassing new .accounts with great success. His own efforts, he considered, were still not high enough to get the coveted flag so he got a committee of businessmen formed with the Mayor (Mr S. Evans) as chairman, to still press for more accounts to be opened. As a result 40 national savings bureaux were opened in the district and in the last two weeks another 300 accounts were bagged. The total new accounts which numbered just over 1300 placed Papakura in the provincial lead for the time being. The method adopted in allocating the flag is by a percentage basis of the resident’s of a given district. There is every reason to say “Well done Papakura. Keep the flag flying,” and to congratulate Mr Davis and the committee for their patriotic work and help in the country’s war effort.
