TRAFFIC BREACHES
OFFENDERS PROSECUTED FINES IMPOSED Fines were imposed on motorists at the Pukekohe Court on Wednesday by Mr F. H. Levien. S.M., for breaches of the traffic and heavy motor vehicle regulations. Richard Percy Woolfield, Waimana. for whom Mr A. P. King, appeared, pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to give way to traffic on his right at the intersection of the Bombay-Puke-kohe-Great South Road main highway. Sergeant T. Kelly said that on May 15 defendant was proceeding in a northerly direction at too fast a speed when his car collided with one proceeding from Bombay to Pukekohe. Mr King said defendant was an experienced driver and a stranger to I lie locality. When approaching the intersection he looked to his right but when he was about to cross was surprised when another car was also about to cross. Defendant was fined £3 and 10s costs.
Douglas Gordon London was charged with exceeding the maximum speed (25 miles an hour) for heavy motor vehicles. Inspector N. G. Davenport said he followed defendant’s truck which weighed 4 tons with its load of calves and pigs, when it was travelling at 46 miles an hour on the Pukekohe-Bom-bay highway. A fine of £3 10s and 12s costs was imposed. Thomas Butler, Grey . Lynn, for failing to keep to the left of the roadway was fined £2 and 12s costs. Victor Neil Kidd (Mr C. F. Blanchard) was charged with driving a motor vehicle on which the lights were defective and with operating a motor vehicle in a mechanical condition liable to cause injury to any person. Inspector N. C. Davenport said the vehicle was a 16-year-old model and was in a very dilapidated condition and unfit to drive and should not have been on the road. While the vehicle carried a warrant of fitness which was about to expire, it could be realised that an old vehicle such as the one in question could be deemed in fair mechanical conditions six months ago. An old vehicle deteriorated very quickly, especially in use. Mr Blanchard said the vehicle in question was taken by Kidd’s butchery as part payment of a debt but it transpired the firm got the worst of the -*eal. Had the firm known the vehicle was in such condition it would not have permitted its use, but as it carried a warrant of fitness it thought everything was in order. The Magistrate imposed fines aggregating £3 10s and costs £l. Archibald Colin McLeod, Manga-
tangi, was fined £1 10s and 12s costs «• *or driving on a main highway, a vehicle not equipped with a foot brake which complied with the requirements of the regulations.
