“PASSING UNDER A CLOUD” THE" WHEY PROBLEM In his monthly report to the Waikato District Pig Council, the district supervisor, Mr C. P. Harrington, said that the past month had been one of Steal uncertainty for the pig industry but it was pleasing to note a return of interest in pigs with the opening of the dairy season. For a time it had appeared hopeless to interest farmers in pigs and this position had a distinct bearing on the low prices received for breeding stock during May, .June and early July. In some districts the change from butter 1.0 cheese had been the cause of farmers going out of pigs altogether. This applied particularly wheie milk was being carted by contract and no whey .was being received on tiie return. All that was possible was being done to avoid wastage of whey. At present the demand exceeded the supply but it was only a matter of weeks before whey at many '■ ctories would become a burden. From information and observation, it appeared that the pig population was not as large as in previous years. While this could only be expected, it was regrettable that such a state of affairs existed when food for those overseas was as essential as munitions.
