GUNNER WALTER CLARK POPULAR PAPAKURA BOY The lirsf Papakura soldier to he killed in action in this war is Gunner Walter Roland Clarke (of the antitank unit). of Duke Street, where his father and mother, Mr and Mrs Ernest Clarke, reside. Walter was a popular hoy in the district and was wellknown in the Karaka district as the driver of the mail and grocer’s van. He was an old hoy of the Papakura district school and practically his first ,ioh on leaving school was with the late Mr Charles Earl in his grocer’s shop in Broadway. He left Mr W. S. Mcllraith’s employ to join up with the Army and left New Zeaalnd about a year ago with the second Echelon and spent about seven months in England before going to Egypt. He was a foundation member, and active supporter ol' the Papakura Greyhound Racing Club, a member of the Athletic Club aiid a well-known forward in the Papakura senior Rugby League team. The news that he lost his life fighting for his country on April 15 has been received with very genuine regret by a wide circle of friends and the sincere sympathy of • 11 residents goes out to his parents and brothers and sisters.
