VETERANS’ TOURNAMENT
PLAYERS OVER 40 TAKE PART

Ail invitation tennis tournament for players over forty years of age, organised by Mr .1. Naysmith, president of the club, was played at the Waiuku courts during the week-end. Sixteen players look port in I lie singles and for the doubles Hie pairs were drawn by lot. Afler a most enjoyable day’s tennis during which some surprisingly good form was seen. the winners turned up in 0. Commins in the singles and I lie same player, partnered by .1. Sparks in the doubles, after a very close match with Olilson and Perry. Commins was playing from the back mark and if was soon clearly obvious that he was in a class by himself as far as Ihe veterans were concerned.
Afternoon lea, provided by Air and Airs Naysmith. was greatly enjoyed and when the prizes were presented die wish was expressed tha I the tournament. should he made an annual fixlure. Results are:—
Singles.—First round: G. Cathercole (rec. 3/C>) heat C. Munro (scr.). 7—3: 0. Commins (owe 40) heat T. Furniss (scr.). 7 —l. Second round: C. Morrin (owe 30) beat G. Perry (owe .15), 7 —2: J. Hughes (owe 30) beat Codlin (owe 3/6), 7 —-2; J. A. Sparks (owe 15) beat A. Ohlson (owe 30), 7—i; Commins beat Cathercole. 7 —l; Brown (owe 3/6) heat McNamara (owe 15 3/6), 7—o; Bird (owe 3/6) beat J. Walker (rec. 15 3/6), 7 —6; McPherson (scr.) heat J. Naysmith (scr.), 7 —4. Third round: Morrin heat Hughes, 7—6; Commins beat Sparks, 7—o; Brown beat Bird, 7 —4; McPherson won by default. Semi-finals: Commins beat Morrin, 7—2; Brown beat McPherson, 7—3. Final: Commins heat Brown, 7—l.
Doubles.—First, round: Hughes and McNamara (owe 15 3/6) beat Naysmith and McPherson- (rec. 3/6), 7—4; Ohlson and Perry (owe 15) heal, Codlin and Furniss (rec. 15), 7—l; Munro and Walker (rec. 15 3/6) beat Bird and Gathercole (rec. 15), 7—4; Commins and Sparks (owe 40) beat Morrin and Brown (scr.), 7 —4. Semi-final: Ohlson and Perry beat Hughes and McNamara, 7—5 ; Commins and Sparks beat Munro and Walker, 7—2. Final: Commins and Sparks beat Ohlson and Perry, 7—6.
