DISTRICT COUNCIL MEETS radio talks arranged COMPLAINT ABOUT A MEAL The January meeting of Hie Auckland District Pig Council was held at Pukekohe on Monday when there were present: Messrs IL G. Clark (president), E. Huckle, IL D. Kerr, J. A. Paterson, 11. Barter, J. R. McArthur, A. Best, together with the secretary (Mr G. R. Basham) and the supervisor (Mr Alex Longwill). An apology for absence was received from Mr J. G. Niccoi who is on annual leave.

Accounts totalling £73 Lis lUd were passed for payment. The superintendent of the Pig Industry, Mr M. J. Scott, wrote advising that arrangements had been finalised for 10-minute talks on Hie pig industry from Station IYA, Auckland, on Hie third Thursday in each month at 7.13 p.ni. Mr Clark gave a detailed verbal report on the last meeting of the executive committee of the National Pig Industry Council dealing among other matters with radio talks, supplies ot copra, molasses, and the shortage ol shipping space for exports to Great Britain.

The meeting passed the following resolution: That trials having indicated thal copra is likely to play an important part in the production of pig meal, this council believes that all supplies purchased by the Internal Marketing Department should he obtained at the lowest possible price, i.e., at world parity and that care should be taken to ensure that only high quality copra be purchased.” It was pointed out that a report had been received by the council that supplies recently purchased from Samoa when delivered was rancid and badly infected with weevil. Mr Barter reported that two pigs had died in his district (Kumeu), and a post mortem examination had revealed the presence of large balls of hair in the stomach, the cause, it was alleged, being due to the animals having been fed on a certain meal, a sample of which showed the presence of hair and fibrous matter. —It was decided to write to the manufacturers of the product drawing attention to the report with a recommendation that all harmful matter, such as hair be removed. Mr Kerr, representative of the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association on the council, raised the question of the council’s donation toward the baconer classes at the Franklin and Kumeu shows. It was agreed to urge all pig club members lo exhibit at these shows as a means of stimulating interest in Hie classes. Pigs lrom the Franklin show will he slaughtered and rejudged at the West-field works on Tuesday, February 18, at 10 a.m. All members and friends are to be invited to attend this judging.

The president and supervisor were authorised to have a model constructed of a proposed sow feeding bail. It was decided to purchase copies of instructional bulletins on pig housing and management and lo sell them at the Franklin and Auckland shows.
