Bombay’s 74th Anniversary Sports

HELD ON SATURDAY FIXTURE WELL ATTENDED FRANKLIN ATHLETES TO THE FORE The Bombay Anniversary Amateur Athletic and Picnic Club celebrated the 74th anniversary of the founding of the district with a monster sports meeting on the memorial recreation ground on Saturday.

There was a large attendance which included Mr Robert Bilkey of. Pukekohe, and Mr W. C. Piggott of Ellerslie, two of the few survivors who were passengers on the Bombay on its voyage from England to New Zealand. Mr Bilkey is 82 years of age and Mr Piggott 78 years, and both were small hoys when they landed in this country.

The Bilkey Shield

Mr Bilkey, who donated a handsome shield three years ago for competition between the Bombay and Paparata schools, presented it to Mr A. Best, chairman of the Bombay school committee, and congratulated the school on its success. He also complimented the people on the progress of the district. The sports meeting was an outstanding success, everything passing off smoothly, thanks to a hand of energetic officials ably directed by the president, Mr G. J. Whitmore. Competition was keen, members of the Ellerslie and Franklin amateur clubs being prominent. The Bombay anniversary cup, the principal event on the programme, was won by 11. Flanagan, of the Franklin club, while Miss H. Pavis, Ellerslie, won the points cup for ladies’ events, she scoring 13 out of a possible 15. The Bilkey shield was won by Bombay school with .103 points to the 95 scored by Paparata. The G McKinnon cup for a relay race between the five best runners of each school went to Paparata "and the same school won the rose howl for the girls’ relay race. Both trophies were presented to Mf F. G. Proctor, headteacher of the school, who was complimented on his school’s success. In handing the trophy over, Mr Best said Paparata deserved great credit for its fine display as the numbers attending the Paparata school were fewer than those attending Bombay.
