ANZAC DAY
“MUST FADE OUT”
RETURNED SOLDIERS’ VIEW
BUT TIME NOT YET HERE
“Anzac Day is a day which will inevitably fade out as a day of National observance. Take Trafalgar Day for example,” said the chairman, Mr J. Comrie, at the annual meeting of the Pukekohe branch of the R.S.A. on Saturday night.
“However, we, as returned soldiers, feel that this time has not yet come. Anzac Day marks a day of national effort; it is one day in which we can remember, in a united way, our comrades who did not come back. Ido not like the move afoot to observe Anzac Day on the nearest Sunday, and it is up to us, as returned soldiers, to retain it on its proper date. He asked the branch to exert all its influence to resist any effort to relegate the observance of Anzac Day to an inferior position. The following motion was then carried: “That this branch is in favour of Anzac Day being kept to its proper day.”
