SUCCESSFUL SEASON

MEMBERSHIP A RECORD

The membership of the Papakura Rugby League Football Clul) reached a record last season, the number totalling 168, including 131 playing and 14 honorary members, according to the report presented at the annual meeting held last week.

Mr L. McVeigh, president, presided over a large attendance of players. Caustic comment was made in the report about llie senior reserve team which was stated to have been definitely a failure, some members playing if, and when, they felt inclined. Why should the club cater for any player who would let his team mates down; selectors should know what to do with those who prefer racing to football it stated.

Four grade teams were entered in the competitions conducted by the Junior Control Board, and although no championships were won these teams played well, particularly .the third and fourth grades who were near the top of the ladder at the conclusion of the competitions. The report commented on the keenness of the seventh grade boys while a number of lads in the fifth grade, new to the game, gained valuable experience. Trips during the season were made to Whangarei and Rotorua where the teams were hospitably entertained. The third annual picnic was a great success, over f>oo people attending.

The dances during the season were as popular as ever but owing to increased costs were not quite so successful financially. The report concluded with thanks to Mesdames Osborne, McVeigh, Fleming, Moss, Rushton and Waterhouse, members (f the ladies’ social commitee.
