MERCER NOTES
SCHOOL COMMITTEE MATTERS
VACANCY FILLED
The following were present at a recent meeting of the Mercer School Committee: Messrs J. A. Anderson (chairman), IT. C. Gordon, Mrs L. A. Ford and the headmaster (Mr J. McDonald). An apology for absence was received from Mr W. G. Graham. The nomination of Mr .1. Scott, as a committee member in place of Mr W. Scott who lias resigned, was confirmed. Mr Anderson then took the opportunity of welcoming the headmaster to Mercer, stating that be hoped his stay would be longer than that of previous headmasters. Mr McDonald replied. Mr J. Scott was asked to interview the employment, officer in Pukekohe with a view to obtaining the services of two men under scheme 13 to effect improvements to the school playing areas. Ini ill up where required and a portion of the recently laid down bitumen is !be replaced. It was decided to apply to the Education Board for three drums of tar for the bitumen work. Mr McDonald made application to the committee and as a result was granted £1 10s with which to purchase suitaide shrubs and plants for the school grounds. Accounts totalling £3 were passed for payment. A letter was received from the Education Board requesting the committee’s opinion on the proposed consolidation of schools in the Pokeno district. After a full discussion on the matter the committee decided to notify the hoard that it was in favour of the proposal, provided that the situation of the consolidation be at Mercer. It was pointed out that it would he of definite disadvantage for the children of Mercer to travel a long distance to the central school after having been so handy to their own. It was also mentioned that if the committee’s proposal was adopted, children from other districts would be well served regarding transport facilities. Successful Card Party. The Mercer branch of the Labour Party held its second successful card party on Friday evening in the town hall supper room. Flag five hundred was played, the winning table comprising Mrs T. Peace, Mrs Peach and Mr .1. Peace. Supper was served at the conclusion. The ladies present were: Mrs G. Dudley, Mrs G. Neil, Mrs Peach, Mrs T. Peace and Mr P. .J. Howell. Personal
Mr J. Morey of Mercer, leaves tomorrow for Whangarei where he will reside in future.
