ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT

AN ENJOYABLE EVENING

The Mauku branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held its annual smokers’ evening in the Mauku Victory hall on Monday evening, the president. Mr A. Woolsey, presiding over a good attendance of members and visitors.

An apology was received from the provincial president, Captain it. M. Rush worth, M.P. The chairman welcomed the member for Franklin. Mr A. G. A. Sexton, the president of the Franklin A. and P. Society, Mr W. J. D. Sharp, the past provincial president, Mr H. 0. Mellsep, Mr C. A. Moore, East Tamaki branch of the union. Mr ,f. E. Bell. Department, of Agriculture. Mr A. White, past-president of the Franklin subprovincial executive, Mr A. Longwill, representing the Auckland District Pig Council. and other visitors. Mr Woolsey remarked that the Union had conducted similar gatherings for the past 14 years, with one exception, and he was pleased to see such a representative gathering. ■ After the presentation of cups and certificates to winners of the union’s competitions, a social evening followed.

Toasts honoured were: The King, the chairman; the cup winners, proposed by Mr A. V. Hill and responded to by Mr V. G. Pilcher and Mr J. D. Paton; kindred associations, Mr G. A. Crispe —Mr W. J. D. Sharp, Mr A. Longwill. Mr E. Ormiston (East Tamaki Dairy Company, Ltd), and Mr H. 0. Mellsop; our member, Mr A. Woolsey—Mr A. C. A. Sexton, M.P.; the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Mr Pilcher —Messrs A. While, G. A. Moore, It. 0. .Mellsop and G. Phillips. Items given by Messrs W. Bright, Rex Yates, M. Brooke and T. 1-1. Midgley were well received. Mr Midgley played the accompaniments.

At the conclusion the chairman thanked the judge of the competitions, Mr J. E. Bell, tlie entertainers and all who had assisted to make the function enjoyable. It was after midnight when the gathering joined hands and sang “Auld Lang Syne.”
