Franklin Lawn Tennis Association.

CLUB COMPETITIONS

MANY MATCHES FINALISED.

BAIN INTERRUPTS PLAY,

In spite of several intemiptions by the light rain which fell at intervals on Saturday afternoon, many of the first-round matches under the Franklin '.Association were finalised. The heavy rain experienced in Auckland appears to have reached Pukekohe late in the afternoon. Matches at Karaka and Waiau Pa were interrupted and will have to be finished next Saturday but on nearly all the other courts matches were completed. On the Pukekohe courts Pukekohe A beat Pukekohe B by seven matches to three, in the A grade. St. James beat Pukekohe by 84 games to 68 —matches being equal—in the reserve A grade, Pukekohe A Triumphant.

In the A grade clash there were some very good matches and in one or two cases the form shown was very gratifying for so early in the season. I. Bayly had a great tussle with the hard-hitting Eric Wright and came from well behind to win 11 —10. As Bayly had scarcely touched a racquet since last season his win was full of merit; and he should do well this season. In the other single T, Fausett was all over Allen Wright who seemed to have no reply to Fausett’s wellplaced drives. The result was somewhat; of a surprise but Fausett must be given credit for the brilliance of his game which shows the benefit of the winter practice he has had. These same players met in the first men’s double and this match provided a thrilling finish' at the end of a match that might have gone either way. With the score 10 —9 and 40-love and A. Wright serving the cousins appeared to have the match in hand but Bayly and Fausett fought back and after duecing tjhe game it fluctuated first one way ’then the other until finally they rnadd it. 10 all. With Fausett to serve they had every change to pull it out of the fire, but the run of the play ■ went against them at critical stages and finally the Wrights won after several deuces. .

In/the women’s singles Miss Jeffries'beat Miss iLawrie after a good game. In the second singles Miss Vi Sutcliffe created a mild surprise by decisively beating Mrs Moody. The winner was very consistent and had length and pace on her drives which will take a good deal of beating. In the doubles between these women the \ pair were definitely on top but the losers were-by no means outclassed. •In the other matches the A team had the advantage and won them ail without being greatly extended. Very pleasing form was shown by J. Lawson in the second doubles and first combined. Being the youngest player on either side he showed a good match' temperament by going for his shots and doing many really brilliant, things. He is inclined to try too much .but will .undoubtedly improve greatly this season/

At;Waiuku the local team was too goodi for . Waiau Pa, winning oil the women’s games-and only losing in the first men’s singles and doubles. Details of play are, the names of the loam: first mentioned taking precedence :|— 7: -»'«t
