SMOKE CONCERT.

PAPAKURA LEAGUE CLUB.

LAST EVENING’S FUNCTION

The annual smoke concert of Ihe Papakura Rugby League Football Club was held in the Regent theatre last evening. The building was packed and a most jovial evening was spent with music, song and story. The evening was enlivened by music from the S.S. Remuera orchestra under the leadership of Mr Alan Dunker. It played old-time songs and the croxvd joined in community singing. After the loyal toast, Mr N. Widdowson proposed the toast of the Auckland Rugby League. He said the Auckland Rugby League had done a good deal over the last 10 years, particularly in its attention to the players. He trusted that the present control would remain. Some people wanted direct club representation on the council, but this would be a backward move, for the present system meant that all (players and public) got a fair deal. (Loud applause). Mr D. Wilkie, chairman of the junior control board, suitably replied. The health of the referees was proposed by Mr W. Francis, junior, and replied by Mr R. Hammond. Air M. Clarke proposed the toast of the Papakura League Club, and the response was in the capable hands of Mr Gordon Wilson, chairman of Papakura club. Mr “Bill” Hindman of IZAI, spoke of his radio sports club which represented 244 sporting clubs in Auckland and some 31,000 members. He then told some amusing stories about wrestlers and wrestling. Air C. S. Beechey for the cricket club, congratulated the League authorities on the successful season. Air Verner proposed the health of the senior B team —the champion team of its grade, and the captain, W. Coimthwaite, smilingly replied, in which he was supported by B. Pope. “The Town Board” was not forgotten, and Air G. Wilson paid a tribute to good work done by the town board in improving Prince Edward park, where the team had played the last three seasons. The reply was made by Air H. E. AlcEntee, who said the activities of the town board did not end with the collecting of rates, but the providing of sports areas was also a definite part of its work. (Applause). The honorary members and supporters and the artists were also toasted. Items were'rendered by Air T. .Tolly (whistling solo). N. Kemp (violin). R. Alarcroft (humour). B. Rae (solos' and A. Easterbrook (saxophone'. The accompaniments were played by Air T. C. Seaton.
