LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

PAPAKURA DEFEAT OTAHUHU. WALMSLEY SHIELD FIXTURE. Papakura senior B team journeyed to Manurew’a on Saturday to meet Otahuhu in the first match for the Walmsley shield. . Under ideal football conditions and with a good crowd of supporters, Papakura proved superior and ran out winner by 16 points to six. Papakura (red) kinked off and Otahuhu almost immediately took . play into reds’ territory. Papakura repulsed them with a fonvard rush and took play on to Otahuhu’s line, W. Taylor diving over at the corner to score the first try, Pope failing with the kick. Otahuhu kicked off aud after an infringement on the part of Papakura, Phillips landed a great goal making the score 3 —2. Papakura again rallied and following a dribbling rush Cornthwaite touched down. Pope again missed. On resuming play the reds w’ere again penalised and Phillips did the rest. The score was now Papakura six, Otahuhu four. After a few’ minutes of even play Cornthwaite received the ball from a scrum and cutting the defence drew’ the fullback and passed infield to Francis who w’ent, over unopposed. Cornthwaite made no mistake with the kick. The half-time score w’as: Papakura 11. Otahuhu 4.

j In the second spell Papakura kick j ed off and w’ere penalised for not play j ing the hall, and Phillips again goaled I Papakura 11, Otahuhu 6. At this stage both teams were playing good open football. From a scrum on tin half-way mark Papakura hooked, Popr sending out a fine pass to Cornthwaite who sold a beautiful “dummy” to go over for a try—a great solo effort lie again raised the flags. Papakura 16, Otahuhu 6. Papakura at tills juncture lost two men through injuries, hut were still attacking when time called, the score being unaltered. Papakura 16, Otahuhu 6. For Papakura Len Taylor w’as the outstanding fonvard and W. Cornthwaite was easily the best back on the field. For Otahuhu G. Phillips and Webb were the pick of the side. Other results w’ere: — Third grade: Papakura 10. R.V. 0. Fifth grade: Glenora 12. Papakura 9. Seventh grade: Otahuhu 14, Papakura 0. Sixth grade a bye.
