LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

SATURDAY’S RESULTS

PAPAKURA TEAMS’ DOINGS

The second series of matches in the Rugby League competitions were played at Prince Edward Park on Saturday under conditions very different from the previous week. The attractions were two junior matches —the sixth grade team playing Greenlane and the fifth grade team playing Glenora.

THE SIXTHS.

The sixth grade team was as follows: It. Irvine. R. Cobbald, P. Knight, 11. Smith (captain), W. Hill, D. Shaw, D. Ilogan. 1. Miller, L. Klinoo, K. Hogan, L. Wright, G. Dickey and B. Clarke. The new team occasioned interest when it filed out. The weight compared well with Glenora. For the first quarter of an hour the local boy? dominated play. That they did not register points was due solely to individualism. Player after player failed to reach the goal-iine by inches . only. To have passed the ball would j have made success a certainty with a ' j more finished attack. The tackling ol j j the local team was good and the lads , ! saved the situation time and again by • courageous efforts. Toward the mid- j die of the game Greenlane scored in | a forward melee. No goal resulted. | Plav went back to mid-field. Papa- !

kura might have evened matters but ! the backs were allowed little clianc* by a pack which failed to spread and . retained the ball. When the final whistle went the score was: Greenlane 3: Papakura 0. [ THE FIFTH GRADE. It was a slightly heavier Glen ore team which took the field against ths ' fifth graders. Confident,, as a result ■ of the previous week’s success, the : Papakura team tossed the ball about 'in pretty style. Glenora played well on top of the local team and stifled efforts wherever they could, and an even I contest ensued. A free kick at handy distance saw G. Bilkey open the account. Later a similar opportunity put the team four points ahead. Glenora were undoubtedly a worthy team i and Papakura found themselves in a dangerous position on a number of occasions. D. Bilkey put the match on a safe basis for Papakura when ho scored a pretty try which was converted. Success led to further success when N. Irvine touched down and the effort was again improved. Papakura stood 14 points up and the match was as good as won. There came a short period of even play. Glenora sent a fast winger away from halfway and efforts were made to stop him but speed and determination were rewarded, the visitors opening their account with an unconverted try. They did not succeed further and the final score was: Papakura 14, Glenora 3.

Coach Secured. The Papakura Rugby League Football Club has been fortunate in securing the services of Davidson, ex-fnternational player, as coach. Mr Davidson proposes to come out from Auckland every Wednesday evening The players are fortunate in having such a capable coach to put them through their paces; they also appreciate the fact that Mr Davidson’s services are voluntary.’

TEAMS FOR TO-MORROW. Papakura league teams for to-mor-row are: — Senior B: Richardson, Burgess (3), Slater, Pope, Gornthwaite, Taylor (2), Evans. Burrell, Homewood, Smith, Fitzpatrick and Francis. Third grade: Aukett (2), Reid (2), Mclnnis, Collins, Cohbald, Wright, Cooke (2). Hogan, Bennett. Godfrey, Robinson and Fleming. Sixth grade: Irvine, Cobbald. P. Knight, Darwin, Hill, Smith , Hogan (2), J. Millar, Klinic, L. Wright. Shaw, Clarke. Dickey and Martin. Next Saturday the sixths play City, the senior B’s play Otahuhu and the thirds play Manukau.

SUCCESSFUL DANCE. The Papakura Rugby League Football Club held a most successful dance last evening in the Regent theatre. These dances are becoming increasingly popular. Ballard’s orchestra provided bright music.
