TOWN BOARD AFFAIRS.

THE REGULAR MEETING. GENERAL BUSINESS. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Papakura Town Board was held on Monday evening, Mr D. Weir presiding. Also present were: Messrs G. F. McDonald, G. W. F. Kerr, .1. Richardson, H. Bartells, H. D. Spinley, A. L. Gooper (clerk) and J. E. Morilleau (foreman).

Increase in salary: By a unanimous vote the board decided to raise the salary of the assistant lady clerk by 5/- per week, the increase to be retrospective from April 1.

Draft Estimates: Draft estimates for the coming year were submitted, so i as to clear the position with regards I to how far the hoard could go in subsidising labour in future. —The acting I chairman, in reviewing the position, said provision was going to be made for a general rate this year of 3£d in the pound.—A member: Any more and I leave the district. Another member: If you can. (Laughter). A further member: I want to and can’t. (More laughter). Continuing the chairman laid it down that the town could not he run for less, but at a rate of 3id in the pound the position would be satisfactory.—Members were all agreed that to levy a higher rate they would all get their “running shoes.” The draft estimates were considered very satisfactory in respect to subsidising labour in future. Relief work stbpped: The officer in charge of the department of labour advised that No. 5 scheme workers could now only be employed in excavating work in Prince Edward park, as (he approved work in the Paburehure Domain No. 1 was completed.—The foreman’s report stated that a start had been made to level a portion of the Village green adjoining the bowling green, hut now the work must be left unfinished, as instructions had been received to stop work iri this area.

' Papalcura social welfare league: In view of the Papakura social welfare league deciding to carry on, the hoard authorised the £ls allocated from art unions to be handed to the league, also to give permission to use the back room at the board's office for meetings. Lease of section: Mr Walter Geissler forwarded 10/- for rent of an endowment section adjoining his property. He suggested that laying of plenty of loose metal at the intersection of Marne road and Onslow road to stop the speeding of motor vehicles, as he considered to tar-seal the corner was only giving speedsters an invitation to step on it.
