Ragwort Control in Franklin County.

INSPECTOR’S REPORT.

SOME FINAL NOTICES ISSUED. WEED KILLER DEMONSTRATED. The noxious weeds inspector, Mr P. Grice, presented the following report to the Franklin County Council meeting on Monday:— • “Inspections: Since last meeting of the council I have inspected 115 properties, a large number of these being second and third visits. In the majority of cases property-owners are complying with my requirements. I have served final notices in a number of cases. '“Weed-killers: The demonstration by an Auckland firm of a non-poison-ous weed killer on ragwort, which was carried out last month has, in my opinion, proved to be very satisfactory. As a result of the demonstration, one farmer purchased 4 cwt. of the preparation to try it out on a larger scale. 1 will be in a better position to report on the economic side after this trial is concluded.

“Manukau County Boundary: I met the noxious weds inspector of the Manukau county and after inspecting most of the properties affected, I made arrangements for the eradication of ragwort along the county boundary at Hunua.

“General: During the month I visited Manukau heads, Awhitu, Orua bay and Graham’s beach and found one or two plants of ragwort on most of the farms in those districts. With the exception of one farm in Orua bay, there is no reason for alarm. I intend to revisit this property and also check up on the others where ragwort was found. I left a supply of sodium chlorate with the owner of the badly-infested property- at Orua' bay for it to be dealt with immediately. I paid a visit to the Moumoukai valley and found ragwort in that area fairly bad. lam enquiring further into two cases where the properties are said to have reverted to the Crown Lapds Department.”
