Rugby Football in Franklin District.

ANNUAL “SMOKO.” TROPHIES PRESENTED. MR J. N. MASSEY OFFICIATES. The Franklin Rugby Sub-union’s season was brought to a close on Saturday evening, when the annual smoke concert was held. The president, Mr J. Allen, presided over a gathering of about 60, including Mr J. N. Massey, M.P. for Franklin, Mr J. Fulton (patron), Mr Walter Barnaby (senior selector), Mr J. R. Evans (delegate to the South Auckland Union), and Mr 0. W. Howe (representing the referees’ association).

The Massey challenge cup retained by Franklin was presented by Mr Massey to Mr William Barnaby, captain of the team. He also presented the following trophies: Senior championship, Onewhero club; Imperial shield (senior), Bombay; junior championship shield, Bombay club (won. for the fifth consecutive time); Rodgers challenge cup (junior), Onewhero club; Taylor shield (schools), Raglan team.

The following toasts were honoured: “South Auckland Union,” proposed by Mr Allen and responded to by Mr Evans; “Donor of the Massey cup,” Mr Fulton —Mr Massey; “Kindred sub-unions,” Mr R. V. Wilcox —Mr C. Halford (Mangatawhiri) ; “Referees’ Association,” Mr Allen —Mr Howe, “President of the sub-union,” Mr Howe —Mr Allen; “The Press,” Mr Massey—Mr A. Membery. Vocal items were given by Messrs W. Hunter,' Howe and L. W. D. Williamson and ventriloquial items by Mr Allen.
