RUGBY FOOTBALL.

IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOLS. MANUKAU SUB-UNION. A well-attended meeting of the school delegates was held in Papakura on Wednesday, Mr A. B. Fordyce, president, being in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and adopted, as was also a very full report of the annual meeting and a committee meeting of the parent body held in Pukekohe and submitted by the local delegates who attended. ; ‘v'fl Considerable discussion followed, and generally the alterations in the conditions regarding the weights for players in the various competitions were approved. The secretary -reported upon the conditions arranged for the playing of the games by the sub-unions for the “Dean” shield .and these were unanimously accepted. Mr Elliott reported the result of an interview with the donor of the “Jackson” cup for competition amongst the local schools, and stated that in order to foster local Rugby ' games more widely, it ’ was thought desirable to alter the conditions so that each school could have a mutually arranged “home-and-home’ r match in its own district with teams : of approximately equal weights, and of numerical strength.

After a lengthy discussion it was l agreed that this season the cup be played for by teams under Gst. 7lbs. in weight, and under mutual agreement regarding the number of players on each side. Ten schools had teams available and *it was decided to start the competition on Wednesday, June j 12 —central matches if transport could not, be easily arranged. All boys taking part in any grade matches were tobe weighed, and/the certified lists forwarded to the secretary. It was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr T. F. Snell for his generous donation of a football for competition on the occasion of thejubilee tournament on May 10. The secretary was instructed towrite to the officials of the Southern United Club and ask permission to holda Manukau schools’ day on the Railway reserve on a Saturday to be fixed, and to receive all gate money as adonation to the South Auckland Primary Schools’ funds: also that each; teacher endeavour to raise funds locally by subscription. In order to lessen the cost of transport it was decided to play a basket-ball competition for the girls on the same days asthe football games—teams to be either six or nine by mutual arrangement., »- Mr J. E. Elliott was elected president and Mr Buchan secretary for the ensuing year, the delegates, Messrs : Fordyce and Buchan being re-elected.. A vote of thanks to the Papakura school committee for the use of thegrounds by visiting schools was carried by acclamation. THE MANUKAU SUB-UNION.
