HOUSE DESTROYED.
FIRE LAST EVENING. OCCUPANTS' HASTY EXIT. A Are which broke out at 10.45 last evening destroyed a six-roomed residence on the Clevedon road, three miles from Papakura. The owner is Mr N, Wade of Auckland. The occupants, Mr and Mrs E. Wade, Messrs H. Wade and G. Isley, who had retired earlier, were awakened by the smell of smoke. As the outbreak had firm hold, they were obliged to make a hurried exit, and could save only a few suitcases and personal effects. It is believed that it originated in the kitchen.
The Papakura volunteer brigade was summoned, but as the burning building was outside the town district no water supply was available. A bucket brigade was formed and the efforts resulted in the wash-house being saved. The electric wires into the house were cut by Mr S. Smith of the Post and Telegraph Department. The lire, which was one of the most spectacular for a long time, could be seen many miles away, and it attracted a large crowd. The insurances are not available.
