Attempted False Pretences at Pokeno.
MAN ORDERS GOODS. SENTENCED TO ONE MONTH. An attempt to obtain goods at Pokeno by false pretences led to Charles Ernest Evans, aged 38, being arrested last week by Constable H. J. Olsen of Mercer. When Evans appeared in the Pukekohe Police Court before Messrs F. Perkins and D. Mc.G. Armstrong, .T.P.’s, lie was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.
Sergeant Jones stated that accused, who represented himself to be J. Leinn, a farmer residing I d miles from Pokeno. called, at business premises at Pokeno. ordering three horse collars, three covers and a pair of ploughlines. Evans stated that he had left his money at home. Constable Olsen, who chanced to be in Pokeno making other enquiries, interviewed Evans as to where he came from. It was then that the constable found out about the attempted false pretences. Accused had three previous convictions for similar offences.
