LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

SECOND GRADERS’ SUCCESS. KNOCK-OUT CONTEST WON. DEFEAT OF MANGERE. The Papakura Rugby League team won the second grade knocko-ut competition on Saturday in a convincing manner, defeating Mangere at Onehunga by 26 points to three. The Papakura team hopelessly outclassed the Maoris yet in the first half only one try was scored. In the second half the issue was never in doubt, for with the exception of one flash of brilliance by the Mangere backs which resulted in a try, Papakura confined the play to their opponents’ twenty-five. After playing a drawn game with Otahuhu, the locals have shown marked superiority over the other teams, registering 65 points against 13 in three games The Flay. Papakura kicked off against the wind and a passing rush took play to Mangere’s line. The latter put up a good defence until a penalty gave welcome relief. Wilson returned with a long line kick and then Smith and Dunne combined well and had Mangere in difficulties again. Another penalty to Mangere right on their line pushed the reds back but Wilson retrieved with aSO yards’ run. A minute later from a scrum at quarter way, Pope gained possession and went right through to score a great try which he failed to convert. Papakura 3, Mangere 0.

Mangere brightened up a bit and invaded red territory but the advantage was short lived. Back went the Papakura forwards in an almost irresistible rush only to be penalised when within easy scoring distance. From a scrum the ball shot out to G Wilson who went over right at the goal post. Two or three opponents pushed him back in the field of play and the try was not allowed. Half time sounded shortly after.

Mangere’s kick off for the second stanza was collected by Francis who dazzled everybody with a tricky run which finished up under the goal posts. I. Wilson converted. Papakura 8, Mangere 0. A very pretty piece of work ended in a splendid try for Mangere between the posts hut the easy shot missed. Mangere 3, Papakura 8. For a few minutes Mangere. made the game more interesting, but a long line kick by Wilson put Papakura backon attack. Pope opened up from a scrum for all the backs to handle and Morgan to score. I. Wilson converted. Papakura 13, Mangere 3.

Johnston was the next to go over but lost’ possession. Then another passing rush ended with Francis scoring again. Wilson added the goal. Papakura 18, Mangere 3.

Johnston collected from a scrum and dived over for a good try which was not converted. Papakura 21. Mangere 3. ‘Ross was the next but his try was disallowed when the ball rolled on after being touched down. With time almost up the Papakura backs again got moving and Callaghan scored for Wilson to convert. Papakura 26', Mangere 3. The game had by this time become far too one-sided to be interesting and the final whistle blew without alteration to the score.: DEFEAT OF THIRDS. The third intermediates were beaten by Ponsonby at Carlaw park by 16 points to 13 after a keenly contested game.
