League Teams Entertained at Tuakau.

PROGRESS IN LOWER WAIKATO

The visiting Mangere and Ponsonby Rugby League teams were entertained at the Tuakau hotel on Monday after playing matches with the Lower Waikao Sub-League’s representative teams.

Mr Wilkie, chairman of the Auckland Rugby League’s junior management board, referred to the progress and standard of the code in Tuakau. He said he was surprised at the result of the senior match and was very pleased with the knowledge of the game as shown by the Lower Waikato players, who had played only four games of the new code. Mr Wilkie expressed the opinion that the Lower Waikato team would be an excellent one when the finer points of the gam were polished up. So satisfied was he with the display, Mr Wilkie said that, upon his return to Auckland, he would make every endeavour to stage Lower Waikato against another team as a curtain raiser to a big match at Carlaw Park.

The referee of the matches, Mr V. Fisher, paid a glowing tribute to the standard of league in the district. He said it was far beyond expectations and he admired the players of this district who worked in harmony with the officials.

In reply Mr G. N.. Asher extended thanks to Mr Fisher for the information he had passed on to the players during the game. He also asked Mr Fisher to convey to the Referees’ Association his league’s appreciation for the assistance Lower Waikato had received during the past. Referring to the match Mr Asher stated it was the best game of football he had seen in Tuakau during the past 11 years and special thanks are due to Messrs Isaacs and J. Hapi who had assisted the game* along by their long experience as league players.

A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Lower Waikato League for its hospitality.
