LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Unfinancial Members. Mention was made at the Papakura Chamber of Commerce annual meeting that quite a number of members were unfinancial. This state of affairs is by no means peculiar to the chamber of commerce. Almost every club and organisation has the same difficulty, states a correspondent who attends quite a large number of meetings of various organisations. A prominent resident of Papakura maintains that the only way to get subscriptions is to lower them still further and obtain more members.
A Special Constable. The Papakura Chamber of Commerce at its meeting on Wednesday decided to recommend to the town board the advisability of swearing in the night-watchman as a special constable. The subject was raised by Mr C. S. Beechey, who "expressed the opinion that from what he could gather it would be to the advantage of the night-watchman if he was given power to carry some weapon during the course of his duties. The Bex. W. C. Wood said that would be impossible as the police were not even allowed to carry fire-arms. Mr Beechey then moved a motion which is to be passed on to the board fcy way of a recommendation.
