RACES AT PAEROA.

i HUNT CLUB PROPOSAL

MATTER BEING INVESTIGATED

It is possible that towards the latter end of this year a hunt club race, meeting will be held at Paeroa, the Maramarua Hunt Club, at its annual meeting last Saturday evening, having decided to investigate the project.

1 The club, which was formed last | season, has made great progress, and ' members have enrolled from all parts of Hauraki Plains and even from about Paeroa. For the purpose of getting the club to take its hounds to Paeroa if sufficient members could be enrolled to justify this, Messrs V. Young, of Hikutaia, R. A. Wiggins, of Tirohia, and J. Irwin and J. M. Crosby, of Paeroa, attended the annual meeting. Mr Wiggins stated that a short canvass had been made about Paeroa, and while he was not as optimistic as some others, ho anticipated no difflculty in securing fifty members. There was much enthusiasm in the district. Support from Paeroa. This was endorsed by Mr V. Young, who mentioned that for some years efforts had been made to get the Waikato Club to take its hounds to Paeroa. The effort had not succeeded. Paeroa people had watched with interest the progress of the Maramarua Club, and when the possibility of it embracing Paeroa had been realised, no difficulty had been experienced in obtaining offers of membership. The result of the canvass had been very gratifying. While there was some difficulty about securing suitable areas for hunting over, there were some places which would be suitable, and, as the club's area'went as far as Athenrec and Mangaiti, there should be no difficulty in securing suitable country on the Waihi Plains. Thus, if the club extended its sphere of active operations to Obincmuri, it would make rapid progress and in ,1 short time be in a position to hold a hunt club race meeting on the Paeroa race-

course. j Mr S. Symes, the whip, said that he was thrilled at this news. It had been his hope to see the club grow sufficiently to hold races, and Paeroa was the logical place. It would be desirable to have a committee of Paeroa men to undertake the work neoeesary in the locality in connection with hunting. The work of preparing and repairing the fences could not be undertaken from Marainarua. The club would undertake to take the hounds and members if the Paeroa people would undertake to fix up the country which was to be hunted over. ! The master, Mr J. D. Pagan, suggested that the Paeroa men p-esent form themselves into a committee. Messrs V. Young, R. A. Wiggins, J. Irwin and J. M. Crosby undertook to act, and it was stated that no difficulty would be experienced in securing other enthusiastic helpers, probably quite a number of active members and a good amount of financial support. Mr Maher suggested thai the club take its hounds to Paeroa as soon as .possible. j Tn reply to Mr Young the secretary read the rule governing the number of times a horse had to be ridden to hounds to qualify it to take part in a race meeting. On the motion of Mr S. ?ymes it was decided that it be a recommendation from the meeting to the club that whenever it became in a position to hold a hunt club race, meeting an endeavour be made to make arrangements with the Ohinemuri Jockey Club lo hold the meeting on the Paeroa racecourse. Members agreed thai no other racecourse was worth considering, and the motion was carried unanimously. Totalisator Permit. On the motion of Mr M. M. Miller, who mentioned that there was a hunt club which had a totalisator permit and which was ,*?oing out of action, the secretary was instructed to make enquiries relative to securing its totalisator permit.
