LATE MAJOR JOHN WHITNEY. ; AN IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL. i The funeral of the late Major John i Wlii tney, who died at his residence in ' Remuera on Tuesday evening, was held ‘ All Souls’. Glcvedon, Anglican burial ground on Thursday. The service ■' was conducted by the Rev. Percy Houghton, vicar of SI. Mark’s Church, , Remuera, and the pall bearers were the son and grandsons of Major Whitney. The interment was alongside the grave of the late Mrs Whitney, who died in I TIT. A son of Major and Mrs Whitney is also buried here; he was Mr A. C. L. Whitney and met his death by | drowning of Ponui Island in 1891 in company with Messrs G. E. Hale, J. H. Burnside and A. W. Stevens. For some years the Whitney family lived at lho Rank Farm in north road, Clevedon. the property now owned by Mr E. P. Overy. Major Whitney took a keen interest in All Souls' Church and some years ago gave a donation to form the capital of an endowment to be used for the benefit of the church. In to res | received from this Whitney Trust Fund has been spent on the purchase of mate,rials to improve the church building and grounds. The money so received has been met with an equivalent in work from parishioners with a result; that substantial fences, have been erected, lengths of j concrete paths laid and Hie church ; painted. Both as a token of respect J and as a recognition of Major Whit- i ney's benefaction representatives of the church attended the funeral.
CHURCH AFFAIRS. The Venerable W. J. Simkin, Archdeacon of Manukau, and Col. Barton, of the Anglican diocesan office, Auckland, attended the September meeting of the Clevedon Anglican Central Vestry on Thursday. There was a large attendance of members and the financial position of the parish was discussed very fully. The members of the vestry and the visitors were the guests of the vicar and Mrs Rattray to afternoon tea at the vicarage.
A social afternoon to bid farewell to the Rev. S. G. Francis and Mrs Francis is to be held in Clevedon hall next Tuesday. Mr Francis, who has been minister of Clevedon Presbyterian Church for the last three years, is going to an important charge in Otago.
The committee of the Clevedon branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association is arranging for a smoke concert to be held shortly. Although only recently formed the branch has a membership of fifty. Several social events are arranged for the next few weeks. A dance is to be held in Otau hall on September 13; the hockey club hold their annual ball, with Len Meredith’s Adelphi orchestra providing music, on September
29, the Clevedon troop (machine gunners), Auckland Mounted Rifles, are having their dance on September 15 and have arranged for the Blind Institute Band of five instruments to play. The golf club’s ball is on October 27.
