LEAGUE FOOTBALL. PAPAKURA VICTORIOUS. Ml'. WELLINGTON BEATEN. Tlic Ml. Wellington (royal blue) and Papakura (nod) met on Saturday in the Auckland League's second grade competition. It is only a few weeks ago that the above teams met in a practice game and to-day no one would recognise the. same teams. Ml. Wellington won the toss and Papakura faced a strong sun. A. Johnston set the ball in action and inside two minutes used the boot that hoisted two points from a penalty. The teams were only in action again when in a set scrum the blues were penalised for lifting. The kick was of no avail as Osborne appeared too eager. The Mount pressed and had a shot; which missed and seconds later Ashby came across very fast and saved a dangerous onslaught and the reds received a free for not allowing Ashby to play the ball. From a scrum Ruki sent the ball along the red line for It. Hammond to cut in and score wide out. A. Johnston kicked a wonderful goal and received an ovation. Papakura 7 Mt. Wellington . . .. 0

From the drop out A. Johnston received and almost got over in the corner. In the tight play that followed Osborne shone and was only inches short. From the scrum Ruki sold the dummy and went oyer, but could not touch down. From the five-yard scrum Francis wormed his way over but the Mount received relief as Francis was penalised. The Mount were lucky again and gained 30 yards by the free kick. Papakura returned to attack and several men were almost across. They gave Mt. W. Francis relieved the situation and in a great run W. Smith missed a gift try. Back came the blues and went over, hut Ruki’s leg was between the ball and the ground. In the fiveyard scrum Ruki cut in and cleared and a moment later S. James soundly tackled L. C. Painter. Not to be denied Painter received the ball again and cutting in opened the Mount’s score. The game was evenly contested and just, before half time Martin was robbed of a try by inches. At half time no score was recorded. In the second spell Papakura made things willing and Papatoetoe cleared in great style to follow through, and Richardson taking things too easy missed the ball for Papatoetoe to snap up and score in a good posifion. The kick was a beauty. Papatoetoe 5 Papakura 0 Papakura returned and were all but over and a moment later Richardson threw a long pass infield which was missed and also a try under the posts. Papatoetoe cleared and the final whistle blew with Ihe score unchanged. Mr S. A. Fisher refereed. The Aulsclt trio played sterling foolball.
