BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.

GENERAL BUSINESS

The regular meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council was held on Monday evening when there were present, His Worship the Mayor (Mr John Routly), Crs. G. T. Parvin, P. A. Miller, R. E. Morland, F. J. Morrow, A. F. Brown, A. T. Begg, H. Curd, J. P. Rae. together with the town clerk (Mr S. Bish) and the foreman (Mr S. J. Clews).

Mr s. P. Day pointed out that the improvements effected to East street made it impossible 1o use his entrance. He requested that means of access be provided to his property.— Referred to the works • committee for a report. The Pukekohe branch of 1 lie Farmers’ Trading Company stated that it had been noted that the grandstand on Hie Domain had been erected by the council and not by contract. It requested that for future works of Ibis nature it be* given an opportunity of quoting for the supply of hardware.— The Mayor pointed out that in view of the fact that the plan of the building was varied from time to time if was not feasible to obtain quotes for the work. The materials had been purchased locally.—lt was decided, on the motion of Cr. Rae, seconded by Cr. Miller, to reply that as a matter of general principle, the council always gave local tradesmen an opportunity to quote but in this case it was not feasible to work on a quotation because the .job was increasing due to alterations. Messrs G. W. Gall and D. Adams were granted easement over Belgium road opposite Mr Roose’s property and over Cape Hill road opposite their respective properties for the purpose of bringing water to their properties from Mr Roose’s bore, on conditon that the road surface was left in good repair and subject to three months’ notice being given by the council for the cancellation of the easement.

The question of planting trees round the drainage treatment area (which is at present rented by natives), recommended some time ago by Mr T. V. Gulliver, w r as referred to the works committee.

The Transport Department forwarded draft of heavy motor vehicle regulations proposed to be substituted for the present motor-lorry regulations, and invited criticism and suggestions before July 31. A sub-committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs. Curd and Morland was set up to go into the regulations in conjunction with localA.A.A. officers and report to next meeting. The Mayor dissented, remarking that he saw no reason why the council itself should not deal with the question.—lt was pointed out that the advice of motorists would be very helpful. The Mayor said he would not act on the committee.
