HALF CHAIN ROAD.

FROM OPAHEKE STATION.

Asking that a half-chain right-of-way from the Opaheke station to the Papakura-Hunua main highway be dedicated, a deputation of six Opaheke residents waited on the Franklin County Council on Monday. The chairman, Mr J. N. Masscy, M.P.. explained to the council that the matter had been before the council on a previous occasion. The Public Works Department had been communicated with but it declined to accept dedication. Through their solicitors, the interested parties had been asked to provide the additional half chain of road but no reply was received by the council.

Mr E. M. Kinlock asked whether I the council would take over the present, road which had been used for the past 40 years. Mr J. Walker said some of the sottiers were willing to give the additional half chain from their properties but others were not. In portions of Auckland a road 50 feet in width met requirements. In explaining the position, the chairman stated that according to the act the half chain was only a right of way. A quarrying company had tramway rights over the route. After the deputation had withdrawn the chairman stated that even if the department accepted dedication, which he doubted very, much, the council VVnuid be','■ compelled to acquire the. other half chain "within the next few years. ..,'•• •-■

The matter was referred to the chairman, the engineer and the clerk, the chairman to interview the Publlo Works Department on the subject.
