Pleasant Evening. A pleasant evening was spent at the bowling pavilion on Tuesday last, when the first of a series of card evenings under the auspices of the Pukekohe croquet club was held. There was a good at tendance. The trophies, which were donated by Mesdames Keith and .1. Blake, were won by Mrs Fausett and Mr Green. A Factor for Peace. Several local exhibitors have gained successes at the Auckland Winter Show. Mrs A. Franklin (Mauku) and Mrs L. Hoult- (Runciman) won first and second prizes respectively, for farmers’ unsalted butter. The former also gained first place for fanners’ salted butter. In the schools’ division, for schools with an average attendance under 81, the Mauku school gained first and second places for the work of scholars.

Sunday Concession Fares. The Railway Department announces that on and after Sunday next all concession fares for Sunday journeys on suburban lines will be withdrawn, and the full ordinary fares will he charged for Sunday travel. The areas affected are the zones Aucklancl-One-hunga-Papakura, Auckland-Waitakere, Wellington-Waterloo-Upper Hutt, Wel-lington-Plimmerton, N a P iei ’- Hastin S s > ,Lyttelton-Ran-giora, Bvansdale-Port Ghalmers-Oto-kia, Invercargill-Bluff. Concession fares issued prior to Sunday next will not be affected and will be available for use on Sundays up to their expiry dates. Through tickets will not be affected.

Some Wonderful Valleys

Mr G. .1. Whitmore, of Bombay, who has just returned from a visit to Kaikohe, speaks interestingly of the potentialities of the North.
