MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.

GENERAL BUSINESS. The regular meeting of the Pukekobo Borough Council was held on Monday evening, when there were present: —His Worship the Mayor (Mr John Routly), Crs. G. T. Parvin, P. Miller, W. J. Short, F. J. Morrow. R. Fulton, G. H. Armstrong, J. P. Rae, A F. Brown, and Mrs S J. Clews (borough foreman). Mr J. K. Ledger wrote stating that the cost of the survey etc. of the proposed road from John Street to Edinburgh Street would be £2O. -This would include one plan, two tracings, etc. An additional plan and two tracings of the area owned by the Hunter trust would' cost £4 Is. The Shell Company of New Zealand, Limited, Auckland branch, in reply to the council advised that the unladen weight of its lorries operating in the Pukekohe area were -i toils G cwt and . 3 tons 16 cwt,- respectively. The company expressed surprise • that a number of the borough roads had a limit of 2| tons, being classified as. fifth class, and asked to be furnished with a list at the earliest so that orders could be issued to the local supperintendent.—The Information is to be supplied. The Public Trustee acknowledged the receipt of the communication appointing him as sinking fund commissioner of the Waterworks Extension Loan, 1928, of £8,500. Not Required. The Auckland City Council offered to supply the council German machine guns and trench mortars, at present stored in the town hall, if it paid freight and packing charges. —It was decided to reply stating that the council was in possession of all the German machine guns it required. Mr R. E. Morland, Pukekohe, gave notice that two kerbside petrol pumps in his name were to be operated by J. J. Kelliher, Ltd.

The solicitors for the' Maxwell estate advised that the trustees were not prepared to pay the rent referred to by the Council. If the road was dedicated and was open then they expected it to be kept and put into the condition of a properly dedicated road. -—The letter was received and it was decided to ask the trustees to pay rental amounting to £5 a year, otherwise the road would be thrown open. • The Vacuum Oil Company, Proprietary, Limited, intimated that'thc loaded weight of its tank wagon was four tens. It asked to be informed of the particular fifth class roads which were referred to hy the council.—lnformation asked for to be supplied. Messrs G. B. Buxton, Ltd., Wellington, advised that the council’s loan had been officially confirmed by the lenders. The loan of £4,500 had been secured from the Government Life Insurance Commissioner, whose solicitors were applying for the instalment orders. These would be through and the documents completed in time for payment to be made on June 1, as require'd. — Referred to the Finance Committee.

-Mr. M. .Hickey wrote thanking the council for keeping the position of traffic inspector reserved for him, and stated he would he resuming duty on or about March 24.,

The Pukekohe Swimming Club asked for permission lo hold a carnival in the baths on March 15 during the afternoon and evening, and offered to contribute 25 per cent of the receipts of the afternoon. Admission charges would be 6d for adults and 3d for children. Regret Expressed.. The club in reply to the council stated that it had approached the late town clerk regarding the recent carnival, the date of which was uncertain owing to permission having to be obtained from the Auckland centra, and received his sanction. Mr Armstrong had advised the club’s delegate to carry on and he would endeavour to obtain permission. If the club took too much for granted it expressed regret at not having obtained written permission, but as the Auckland executive <inly forwarded definite culvicc at the last moment, the club in its haste did not have time; otherwise it would have meant postponing the carnival again.—The letter was received and the explanation was accepted. It was also decided to p'oint out that, written permission could have been obtained at any time had application been made. Solicitors for the Hunter estate wrote accepting the council’s offer for land required for the connecting road. Harris Street and John Street. _ The executor for the estate of E. J. Brittain wrote offering to supply street rubbish baskets, as used in Auckland streets and parks, or to forward a sample together with prices.—Received.

The District Public Trustee in reply to the council regarding the council’s attitude in the matter of revaluing

properties under section VIII. of the Municipal Corporations Amendment Act 1928, asked that he he informed when any active steps were being taken. Mr ,T. G. Wiles made application for
