OBITUARY.

MR .WILLIAM ADAMS. •> .. A CAPE SETTLER.

One of the Cape settlers in the person of Mr. William Adams passed away at his residence, Harrington Avenue, Pukekohe, on Christmas Day. Born*at Luton, England, To years ago, the late Mr Adams together with his parents, the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Adams, and other members of the family went to South Africa to make their home. The vessel in which they were making the voyage was wrecked on the trip and they were e taken on to Capetown in another ship. The emigrants resided at the Gape for five .years before coining to New Zealand with the Cape settlors. With his brothers deceased settled at Pukekohe and was engaged in pioneering work throughout the district. They cleared a large acreage of standing bush, including the area now in the proximity of King Street and where the old school 1 stood near the ceme- ; tery. W-v When deceased married he acquired *'3l a block of land in the Puni district

and brought it into a productive state. For about 30 years Mr Adams resided on his holding and retired to reside in Pukekohe some 15 years ago. Deceased was an enthusiastic member of the Volunteers, he being in the Pukekohe troop for very many years. Mr y Adams was a well-known figure in Pukekohe and was very popular with all who had the pleasure of his ac-

quaintance. Deceased is survived by his widow, three sons —Messrs E. .T. Adams ' (Puni), W. Adams (Taupiri), John Adams (Pukekohe) —and three daughters —Mesdames J. McClune (Waiau Pa), Mill (New Plymouth) and J. Weston (Pukekohe). There are also 12 grandchildren. -
