FACTORY DRAIN.
COMPANY REPORTS CLEANING. QUESTION OF PAYMENT. In a letter to the Papakura Town Board on Monday evening, the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company advised that the drain from the Papakura casein factory had been thoroughly cleaned and the noxious weeds removed therefrom.
The cost of the work totalled £ll 16s 3d for the 31£ chains, stated the company, and if after inspection by the board's officials the work was found to be done in a satisfactory manner it asked to be paid 30 per cent of the cost, as agreed to by the board. The company also asked that an inspection be made of the crossing at the Great South Road as it was of the opinion that the effluent was being caught there. The chairman, Mr J. McCall, said the work had to be proved satisfactory before the payment was made to the company.
Mr 11. E. McEntee contended that the company had to bear the cost of the first cleaning. It; was agreed that the health officer was to make-an inspection in any case, stated the chairman. Mr D. Weir said the lowering of the culvert at the Great South Road crossing would make an appreciable difference. The flow from McLennan's drain was faster and consequently backed up the factory drain. Mr McEntee stated his recollection of the agreement with the company provided that the board had to- pay 30 per cent of the cost of future cleanings of the drain. In reply to the chairman, the foreman stated that he considered the lowering of the culvert would not affect the foundations. • The matter was referred to the Finance Committee to ascertain the agreen.ent arrived at between the parties.
