j LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY. i THE ANNUAL MEETING. Thu annual meeting of the Bombay Literary and Debating Society held last week was well attended by members. Mrs Burgess presided. The balance sheet submitted by the treasurer, Mr G. Darby, revealed a credit of £2 14s 5d on the year’s working and was adopted. The annual report stated that there had been an increase in membership of 21. During the session twelve meetings had been held, there being six debates, two lectures, one social even-

1 ing, one on public speaking, one news- : paper evening and a monk court. The thanks of the society were due to the Rev. John Hubbard and the Rev. S. Nixon; the former for his lecture on humour and the latter for his address upon William Shakespeare. In entering upon the sixth session the club needed no apology for its existence. The lighter forms of amusement and nearly ail sports were well catered for in New Zealand and many cf the young people had not the same opportunity of becoming familiar with great English literature, of taking an intelligent interest in political and social questions or of learning Lo speak fluently in public, stated the report. It was the ambition of the founders of the society that it might fulfil a useful function in helping to fill those gaps. After having a successful life of five years il was confidently anticipated that the society would be of greater usefulness in Ihe future. Officers elected were:—President, Mrs Burgess (re-elecLod) ; vice-presi-| dents. Rev. Belshaw, Messrs A. Ingram, ! R. Donovan and A. Best; secretary, Mr : P. J. Wootten; treasurer. Mr C. Darby; executive, Misses M. Proude, Creodon, Messrs W. D. Teesdale, .'?. B. McKin- J ney and Roberts. It was decided to commence > the i session in about three weeks’ time. ;

OPAHEKE HALL COMPANY. THE ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Opaheke Hall Company was held in the Bombay Hail on Friday evening. The chairman of directors, Mr D. McKenzie, presided over an attendance of 18 shareholders. The statement of accounts for the past year showed an improvement in the financial position, the overdraft having been reduced lo £67 13s 4d. The excess of assets over liabilities stood at £961 11s 2d. The balance sheet was adopted on the motion of Messrs A. .1. Harris and R. Donovan. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr P. Wilson and the committee which arranged ping pong evenings last year. A recommendation to the directors to hold a Paddy’s Market lo raise funds to liquidate the overdraft was adopted.

It was unanimously decided to grant the free use of the hall for Anzac Day services. The retiring directors were, Messrs. D. McKenzie, E. J. Fahey and R, Evans. Resignations were received from Messrs R. Donovan, J. B. McKinney and G. T. Proude. After persuasion Messrs Donovan and Proude consented to nomination. The election of directors resulted in Messrs P. Wilson, R. Evans, W. Hayward, S. G. Shaw and G. T. Proude being returned. Mr A. Best was elected auditor. At a meeting of directors held subsequently, Mr 11. J. Flay was elected chairman and Mr W. D.
