A LUCKY PUNTER.

WINS BIG POUBLE. The largest individual win over the j V.R.G. autumn double was £BOOO, the j lucky man being - as resident of South I Australia. To secure this sum he in- , vested £32. At the time he made the wager St. Ardent had not come prominently into the Newmarket discussions, but it is ! known that the stable was quietly confident of pulling off the big prize. St. Ardent was bred in South Australia; Some Quality comes from that State, and these facts supply a reason for the double. The backer of the double was great - ly enamoured of Some Quality's prospects, and in seeking a first leg, he chose St. Ardent partly because of the stable confidence, and also because St. i Ardent is a son of St. Anton who has j sired some wonderfully fast horses. I Thqre were several winers of smalj ler sums, ranging from £2OO to £2OOO ' over the double, and one of the leadj ing operators reported to-day that I Some Quality was a worse horse for him than the favourite, Mondiaga, ■ would have been. The longest odds offered against the winning combination was 250 to 1. There are some followers of racing I who have a great liking for alliterative j doubles, ad in this instance they score I a triumph with* St. Ardent and Some j Quality. One man reported havingj enriched himself to the extent of £SOO in this way.
