Post Office.

/ The local Post and Telegraph Office Will not be opened between 7 and 8 p.m. daily from now on, as the produce season has officially closed. This practice will come into operation again on October I,‘the commencement of the produce season.

Rainfall at Patumahoe.

: During the three months ended March 31, 6.93 inches of rain fell at Patumahoe. In January 1.47 inches were recorded at the Patumahoe school, ,in February .46 inch and in. March 5 inches.' The maximum temperature for March was 77. degrees and the minimum 58 degrees. The First Power Board Loan. * * In 1925 the Franklin Power Board, prior to taking the loan poll for reticulating the district, issued an explanatory pamphlet. The temporary loan of a copy is most urgently re-quired-at the Board’s Office just now, and anyone who has happened to retfiin one would greatly oblige the staff by allowing them the use of it for a day or two.

Cars in Collision.

Two motor cars driven by the Rev. S. Nixon, of Pukekohe and Mr Walker, of Auckland, were involved in a collision in the vicinity of Taylor’s corner on the Patumahoe-Waiau Road on Monday. Mrs Walker was cut on the face as the result of her head breaking a celluloid in one of the sidecurtains. It is understood that the cars were only slightly damaged.

Race Meeting at Pukekohe. The Franklin Racing Club has been granted permission to hold * another race meeting at Pukekohe during the present racing year. At a recent meeting of the executive it was decided to hold the meeting on Saturday/May 11. A programme of seven races has been drawn up and the stakes' to be offered amount to just under £I2OO.

Epidemic of Deaths.

A report from the Rangiriri district states that there is an epidemic of deaths among Maori children at the Hora Hora settlement on the southern shores of Lake Waikare. During the Easter holidays four children are said to have died. There have also been several deaths at neighbouring settlements. The Huntly police and the Health Department are investigating.

.Mounted Rifles Camp. Members of the Auckland Mounted Rifles will enter camp at Waiuku next Monday to undergo their annual training. The unit will be under canvas on the racecourse for a period of ten days. The Commanding officer of the regiment is Lieutenant-Colonel M. Aldred, of Waiuku. Major W. G. H. Stevens will be second in command and Lieutenant E. G. Moncrief, M.C., N.Z.S.C., adjutant.

Franklin District Court.

The annual meeting- of the Franlclin District Advertising Court Committee will be held on Friday next in the A. and P. office, when the president (Mr Mitchell) and the secretary (Mr O’Donnell) of the Auckland Winter Exhibition, are expected to be present. As much important business is to be transacted, a full attendance is requested. At this meeting preliminary arrangements are to be made for Franklin’s display at the next Winte** Show.

A Cold Snap

The high and cold southerly wind which has blown persistently during the past five or six days has made a sudden change in the climate which has not been appreciated by either man or beast. Many people consider that the early drop in the temperature foreshadows a very cold winter, such as has just been experienced in the northern hemisphere, it being generally believed that our seasons commonly follow the steps of those the other side of the tropic of Cancer.
