A REAL FEAST.
PUKEKOHE MUSICAL SOCIETY., >-i OPENINQ CONCERT A GREAT SUCCESS. The prediction offered in these columns, that music-lovers would have a treat when the Pukekohe Musical Society presented their first concert was fully justified on. Thursday evening last, when the society gave its opening concert in the Strand Theatre. Despite many counter-attractions and the unpropitious state of-the weather, a surprisingly large attendance of the public was recorded." This must be very gratifying , to the society, as it will not only help the finances, but is a proof that good music is still appreciated by a large section of the community who are prepared to attend the society’s concerts and by so doing encourage the society to persevere in their efforts to promote healthy entertainment.
The programme of choruses, songs, duets, musical monologues, recitations', piano and violin solos, met with a splendid reception, encores being the order of the evening, some of the artists appearing three and four times in answer to enthusiastic recalls. Undoubtedly the star performer of a very fine programme was the gifted Maori singer, Mr. Hohepa Kennedy, and after .hearing Mr. Kennedy, perform it is easy to understand why “big money” interests in Australia have been anxious to secure his services to sing Maori folk-songs to make gramophonerecords. Mr. Edwin Parker, the hon. conductor, was at his best in. wielding the baton, whilst Miss K. C. Cox, as hon. pianist, gave her usual finished performance as accompanist.
. At the close of the concert the president, Mr. W. F. J. Munro, thanked the audience for their patronage and the artists for their help in making the concert a success. J. The concert was concluded by the singing of the National Anthem.
