FRANKLIN COUNTY.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. BAD WEATHER TROUBLES. The Billowing' is the engineer’s report, which was adopted at the meeting of the Franklin County Council on Thursday:— Access Roads, Karaka Railway Station.—ln accordance with instructions received by vour council an engineering survey lias been made of the access roads to the Karaka station. Tiie route followed is as shown on accompanying plan, the western access from a point marked “A” at the Waiuku-Drury road to the propsed subway at railway marked “13,” a distance of 50 chains. The cost of consi ruction, including bridge and necessary culverts, would be £702, and the short length of road from subway on western side to rear of station £7O.

The eastern access from a point marked “U” at subway to “D” at the Pukeki.ihe-Runciman road is a distance of 2 chains, and the cost of construction, including legalisation, would be £l4O. With the eslimated cost of lim railway subway, viz., £2200, the total estimated cost, including both access roads, is £Oll2. The western access road is already legalised, so that no fencing or compensation is required on that side. The eastern access, however, has only been defined by the engineering survey, and will require to be fenced. Tiie cost of land required on this side is not included in the estimate supplied, as I understand the' area required, about 24 acres, is to be given free of cost. A copy of the report is to be forwarded to Mr Bruce Scott, wim was acting for the residents concerned. Bigger Scheme Wanted. Proposed New Road, Jamieson’s to Harrisville School. -—• At last meeting of your council a report and estimate was furnished by me in Connection with the above road. The estimated cost of construction, metalling, fencing and compensation being £1950. I would now respectfully suggest that before further steps are taken regarding, this rating area and loan necessary to carry out this? proposed work a more comprehensive scheme.be considered, viz., the construction of the through road between Buckland and Pokeno, via Whangarala. Starting from 13uckiand, it would be necessary Lo provide for an overhead railway bridge on the southern side of the present railway crossing, and from Lhis point a new road Lo cono.eet up with tiie road already delined between Jamieson’s and Harrisville school.

The total length of road required between Bmckland and Harrisville school would be 134 chains. , The .complete cost of this would probably lie £3400. The proposed roiad between Wliaiigarata and' ’ the Great South Road, via old railway bine, lias been surveyed, and the estimated cost for eonspruc/iion, metalling, compensation, etc., is £5350. The- 1 cost of the overhead railway bridge at Bmoldand would be approximately £220 0. This, together with the foregoia g estimates, would mean an expenditure of £10,950, which would omaMic a good through' road between Pffiiketkohe and the Great South ltoad at Povkeno to he linked up. I wbulil migg-est that the rating area for this expenditure i include pari of Mangaliiwp.iri Valley, j Pokeno Valley, Wtiangar&ta, Tuakait .and all country henefilting between l l uakau and Pukikohe.
