Radar Aid Installed on Ketch Ranui
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. August 20. A commencement has be.cn made with the fitting of radar to the Works Department’s motor ketch Ranui, which is used for servicing the meteorological stations on' the outlying islands. Tho ketch is due to depart for a visit to the Campbell Islands iiext week to transport stores for the meteorologists there and to take, an additional technician to the islands. An official of the Works Department said the value of radar equipment would be considerable in aiding navigation to isolated islands, such as the Campbells, as overpast conditions in the south at this time of the year made navigation by the sun or stars almost impossible. The radar equipment is being fitted by Government radar technicians from the Dominion laboratory at Gracefield.
