OVERSEAS APPLICANTS FOR MEDICAL COURSE FACE ADMISSION PROBLEM
Overseas applicants for admission to first-year classes in medicine are to be notified that, even if thov should be admitted by the University of New Zealand, the difficulty of gaining admission to the second-year classes is so great that they are strongly advised not to come to the Dominion. This decision was reached by the Council of the University of Otago at its monthly meeting yesterday afternoon. The Chancellor, the Very Rev. D. CJ. Herron, presided. Overseas candidates for second-year classes will not be admitted except under special circumstances. It was also agreed that the same preference as is granted to servicemen be given to men of the British merchant navy. These men, it was stated, were regarded by\,the Rehabilitation Department as eligible for full-time rehabilitation assistance. PHYSICAL EDUCATION. Draft regulations for the diploma in physical education, which will be awarded to students who successfully complete the three-year course at the special school to be opened in Dunedin next year, were placed before the council. The aim of the course was to prepare students for work in physical education, health education, and recreation, the report stated. During the first two years of the course there would be a common basic groundwork of theory and practice, but the third year would bring some specialisation in either school physical education, community recreation, corrective work, or research. SAVINGS BANK GRANT. A donation of £7OO from the Dunedin Savings Bank to assist the educational grant for bursaries was acknowledged.
